Article by Tamara Jacobs

Some things should have never gone out of style and that’s why we have vintage. Vintage by definition represents the high quality of a past time – vintage cars, vintage movies, vintage clothing and vintage furniture. So what about vintage shades? We all need to protect our skin and our eyes from the harmful effects of UV rays, so why not do it in original style?

Vintage Shades Style #1:

Vintage sunglasses. Sunglasses do more than keep you comfortable and your eyes protected when the sun is glaring right in your face – they make you cool. Put on a pair of sunglasses and you might have just made your entire outfit. Vintage sunglasses are often big – like too big for your face, big – they are often round and come in a wide variety of wire shapes, colours and sizes. Shades in the shape of hearts, stars or lips were also popular once a time. Essentially, sunglasses were and continue to be an accessory one can and should splash out on.

Vintage Shades Style #2:

Vintage lampshades. Been to your grandmother’s house recently? You might have noticed a few fabric lampshades around, with tassles, embroidery and possibly some silhouettes. While it may not be your personal taste, there is something magical and nostalgic about how dated everything is. It kind of makes you feel like you’ve gone back in time to a place where nothing really matters because none of it is really happening to you.

Vintage Shades Style #3:

Vintage umbrellas. Umbrellas are stylish enough to be used in rain or shine. Vintage styles include, white lace, stylish for sunshine, black and white or toile patterns are always a hit, or bright colours. Satin works well for summer as does a decorative wooden umbrella. Pointed tops were a popular style of umbrella and still look very cool on the beach or even covering your outdoor dining table. Canvas was and continues to be a popular choice for a big garden shade sail, other waterproof fabrics work as well.

Vintage Shades Style #4:

Vintage hats. Hats are a fashionable and fun way to keep your head cool and your face protected from the sun. Large brimmed sunhats have recently made a major comeback. Women around the sunniest parts of the world can be found under floppy, wicker hats and men under their low dark coloured fedoras. Beads, netting, feathers and flowers have all adorned the head pieces of women throughout the decades. A summer hat is something of beauty, it’s purpose is purely decorative and as a result should be well suited to your outfit, mood and general style.

There are so many things they got right back then, which is precisely why fashion designers, architects and well dressed people around the world are constantly looking back for inspiration.
